Daily Lesson Plans

All teachers are expected to have daily lesson plans that are appropriate to the identified needs of their assigned students. The plans should include time, activities and materials needed.

Substitute Teacher Plans

By the end of the first ten days of school, the principal is responsible for making certain that every teacher has developed a set of substitute teacher plans. The principal needs to review and approve each teacher’s plan for completeness and clarity of understanding. These plans need to be updated throughout the school year. The principal maintains a copy of the plans for his/her files and returns a copy to the teacher. The teacher is responsible for notifying the principal of the location of his/her filed plans in each classroom. The principal will periodically check to assure that plans are current and will monitor their use by substitute teachers.

The regular teacher must leave written lesson plans, schedules, procedures, and special instructions in the classroom to assist the substitute teacher. These procedures and instructions must be conspicuous and easily accessible to the substitute teacher. These instructions should include any special needs of the students, including behavior needs, medications that must be administered during the school day, and other medical needs the students may have.

It is difficult for a substitute to exercise the same degree of proficiency in dealing with the special needs of the students as the regular teacher. The substitute must learn about the classroom and the students in a short time. Therefore, the regular teacher should see that everything possible is done to assist the substitute.

The regular teacher can communicate special requirements for substitutes to the substitute hiring service. The hiring clerk will make every effort to secure a substitute who will meet such requirements.
