5141.22 - Infectious/Communicable Disease - Procedure

I. CONFIDENTIAL IDENTIFICATION

Any person who believes, suspects or has knowledge that a student has a communicable disease should contact one of the following individuals in the priority listed:

  1. Principal/Immediate Supervisor
  2. Regional Manager/Director
  3. Program Nurse
  4. Classroom Teacher
  5. Program Psychologist
  6. Central office staff i.e., Student Services division head or designee.

II. CONFIDENTIAL INVESTIGATION

Investigating team coordinated by the principal, and comprised of principal, school nurse and teacher, should contact the following resources to ascertain status of medical condition of the student.

Parent/Guardian
Physician
Upon approval of regional manager or director, the principal may obtain a second opinion from another physician for any of these reasons:

The condition is potentially life threatening to the student or others.
Incomplete information from first physician.
School nurse’s recommendation.
3. Public Health Department (Immunology)

III. OPTIONS

Following the investigation, the team shall provide a written report which may be utilized by a student study team or IEP team. The report will be maintained in the student’s confidential file. It is the responsibility of the student study team or the IEP team to determine and select the appropriate option:

Level I Routine Illness (complete appropriate form with the following options)
  1. Remain in school with standard precautions
  2. Return to school with physician’s release
  3. Brief independent study program (at most two weeks)
Level II Non Routine Illness (complete appropriate form with the following options)
  1. Remain in school with special precautions to be described in SST Report or IEP.
  2. Return to school with physician’s release.
  3. Educate in alternate setting. Whenever it appears, this option will be under consideration. District of residence representative will be notified and should attend the IEP.

In all Level II cases, the following information is to be presented to parents and affected staff:

  1. Review of all standard medical procedures.
  2. Review of all specific precautions.
