The County Committee on School District Organization, created by the California State Legislature in 1949, functions within the rules and regulations established by the Legislature and its own policies and procedures.
Specific authority for the County Committee is found in the California Education Code and the California Code of Regulations Title 5.
The County Committee consists of eleven members, two from each supervisorial district and one member at large, elected at an annual meeting of school trustee representatives for a term of four years.
Major responsibilities of the County Committee include formation of new districts, transfer of territory, and the establishing, abolishing or reorganizing of trustee area boundaries, and increasing or decreasing the number of members of the Governing Boards of a school district if such district is not governed by a City Charter.
The County Committee responds to petitioners, school district governing boards and may initiate studies on its own. The County Committee is responsible to public school districts serving kindergarten through community college levels.
Activities of the County Committee interact with the California Department of Education, County Board of Education, County Board of Supervisors and other State and County agencies.
The County Superintendent of Schools’ designee serves as Acting Secretary to the County Committee on School District Organization.
