Early Literacy
San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools (SBCSS) is raising the bar for literacy in San Bernardino County for all students. Exposing young learners to early literacy skills in developmentally appropriate and engaging ways will improve their school readiness as they prepare for kindergarten. SBCSS grounds our work in the Cradle to Career Roadmap as well as the Countywide Vision2Read initiative.
We strive to provide schools, districts and families with knowledge and resources that will impact the early learning of children ages 0-5. Our support is rooted in current early learning research and practices as we work to expose children to early foundational literacy skills.
This department provides families with resources that can be used to increase literacy moments with their children ages 0-5. Reading aloud, singing songs, making up stories, and using developmentally appropriate literacy-based technology and applications on devices such as tablets and smartphones are all ways that families can develop early reading skills in their children.
Additionally, technical assistance for teachers, coaches, and site administrators is offered using in-person and virtual professional learning and workshops, onsite coaching as well as model lessons. The department also provides presentations at district and site parent meetings and community events.
SBCSS is proud to be the Lead Literacy Agent for the Early Learning Literacy Project (Comprehensive State Literacy Development-Priority 1 focusing on children ages 0-5). We partner with local educational agencies, preschools and family child care providers to establish developmentally informed practices to support early literacy pre-foundational skills.
