California Arts Standards for Public Schools

Prekindergarten Through Grade Twelve

In October 2016, the California Department of Education (CDE), Instructional Quality Commission (IQC), and State Board of Education (SBE) began revising the visual and performing arts standards. Assembly Bills 2862 and 37 mandate the Superintendent, with IQC consultation, to recommend revisions for dance, music, theatre, and visual arts, and to propose new media arts standards. On January 9, 2019, the SBE adopted the California Arts Standards for Public Schools, Prekindergarten Through Grade Twelve (Arts Standards).

California Arts Education Framework

Curriculum frameworks provide guidance to educators, parents, and publishers to support the implementation of California content standards. SBE adopted the California Arts Education Framework for Public Schools, Transitional Kindergarten Through Grade Twelve (Arts Framework) on July 8, 2020. This Arts Framework supports the California Arts Standards for Public Schools, Prekindergarten Through Grade Twelve (Arts Standards), which were adopted by the SBE in January 2019.
